According to reports, on 25th April 2026, during routine patrolling near Samarbaga, a police team led by SI Chitrasen Deheri noticed a suspicious silver-coloured Swift Dzire car without a registration number speeding from Lakhanpur towards Raigarh in Chhattisgarh. When police signaled the vehicle to stop, the driver allegedly attempted to flee from the spot.
Following a brief chase, the police team intercepted the vehicle near Kalimandir at Kureimal on NH-49 and detained the driver, identified as Md. Altaf Ansari, aged 39 years, a resident of Sundargarh district.
During search of the vehicle in presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses, police recovered 480 bottles of ONEREX Codeine cough syrup, each containing 100 ml, totaling around 48 litres. As per the NDPS Act, the seized quantity falls under commercial quantity.
Police said the accused failed to produce any valid documents regarding possession or transportation of the contraband. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed that the cough syrup was procured from Ranchi in Jharkhand and was being transported illegally towards Chhattisgarh for financial gain.
Apart from the narcotic substance, police also seized one Swift Dzire car without number plate and one HMD keypad mobile phone. The total value of the seized property is estimated at around Rs. 3 lakh 77 thousand 720.
