Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar Dies In Plane Crash In Baramati

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, 5 Others Killed in Fiery Plane Crash in Baramati.

In a catastrophic event plunging Maharashtra into deep mourning, Deputy Chief Minister and NCP stalwart Ajit Pawar was killed Wednesday when his private aircraft crashed while attempting to land in Baramati. The accident, occurring on January 28, 2026, claimed the lives of all six on board, including pilots and security personnel.

The tragedy unfolded late morning as the Learjet 45 (VT-SSK) approached Baramati airport. Airport manager Shivaji Taware reported the aircraft encountered critical difficulties, veering violently off the runway and skidding into an adjoining field. The wreckage was instantly engulfed in flames, leaving the aircraft charred. Despite the rapid response of fire tenders and medical teams, the intensity of the crash left no survivors. Close aide Kiran Gujar confirmed that all occupants were declared dead upon arrival at the local hospital.

Pawar was returning to his political bastion to address public meetings for the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections when the journey was cut short. The airport has been cordoned off as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launches a high-level probe into potential mechanical failure or human error.

Ajit Pawar’s demise marks a seismic shift in state politics. Known as the government's administrative backbone, his sudden death is a massive blow to the NCP and the Pawar family. As news spread, a pall of gloom descended over the state, with thousands of grieving supporters gathering in Pune and Mumbai.
